  Fishing

The most of tourists start to acquaintance with Subpolar Ural from fishing. It is simple to catch fishes here if you know how to catch, where, when and what fish want. All replys of this questions are differ for every species of ichthyofayna. I won't detailed process of fishing and attach my opinion because I hope to meet fishermen, very skilled, and their experience will instructibe for me. But If you catched fish in such place as Volga-Ahtyba and waiting anytning   here you are mistake when choose the route. Fishing here is more exerted. It means that you will with fish but for good catch or worthy trophy you need to work, really work. It means you need spend many time on the river, think how to fish, your back and arms will tired in the evening and eyes will full of tears.  If you organism suffer so big train, what do you think how will feel you fishing tackle?  It will be very light, elegant, expedient and sure most of all, very sure.

I start from most extended species:

Siberian grailing:

We call it "chikezh" or "chikish". May be it called siberian but it lives in our rivers of west slope of Subpolar Ural too. Most of all  siberian grailing live in Kozhim river, we regular meet them in Kosyu and Vangur river, smaller quantity live in Lemva river and it's tributary. This specie live here from before-glacier period, when basins of west-slope and east-slope rivers were united. Scientists think so, but they can't elucidate why siberian grayling don't mixe with european grayling? And why it lives on the upper parts of rivers, near the East and don't go downstream, they can't explain. It don't come down in spring floods and ice-growing period too. But big siberian grayling go down in law part of stream of their own rivers. On the west slope of Ural siberian grayling grow to 1,5 kg, but this weight is bigger than in its usual location. In its east slope rivers siberian grailing rarely grow more than 1 kg. But quantity of siberian grailing in siberian slope of Ural is huge. You can catch in 1 day 150-200 kg from pair rapids and drink vodka and swim in this rapid in simultenity. I was witness of this fact in the upper part of east slope river.

No one was more than 1 kg. Thanks to such fishing you can feed up any group without any efforts: it will be fish-soup, fryed fish and bowels, "he", baked and planked fish. What about fishing tackle? It will be light spinning, reel 2500,  any turned bait. The main goal in such fishing - don't catch more than you can eat in nearest 2 days. (It is very tedium. :))

Fishing route for siberian grayling continues from 4 to 10 days and may be both in european and siberian slopes of Ural. It is better combined to catch golez-palia with european grayling.

  The perch and pike:

the best speciman are in lakes of eastern slope of Ural: Balbanty, Tanuraty. Great quantity of pike and perch live in middle and low part of Hulga and Mokraya (Wet) Sunya rivers. I think it is not expedient to organize summer route only for perch and pike. This species are not valuable. It is better to combined grayling and taimen fishing  in Hulga and Mokraya Sunya river with pike fishing and radial routes to lakes. The biggest size of pike is 11 kg, the biggest perch size is 2,3 kg. It would be interesting to catch trophy in winter from out of lake's ice. In this case it is possible to go to catch perch and pike especial. We'll need to take 2 snowmobiles,  2-3 fishermen and 5-7 days. But it is better to go in combined tour for pike's and palia's lakes. The most taste dish from pike is cutlet. Our pike have no smell of muddy ground, becouse it live in clear, light water. All this I can say about perch.

European grayling:

The local people call him "kom". The  local people name is "komi", I think this word means grayling-eaters. It seems to me this fish is out of competition. Yes, the salmon is fater and her taste is softer, but quantity is smaller; chir, pelyad, nelma are taster too, but this species are more rarely than salmon. The fish sig can rival in taste with grayling, but you can catch it only by  net. I said that grayling may be not the tastest fish and remembered about watchman from tourists shelter, who throw out (after visiting of wealthy clients) norvegian salmon. I think the watchman eating grayling all round the year  understood what kind of fish is taster. European grayling very distinguish from siberian grayling. If you will cook fish-soup from siberian grayling in kettle full of fish - it will be soup with 1-2 small spoil of fat and in you plate will be muddy water and pieces of dry fish.  But if you cook fish-soup from european grayling don't hear anyone and don't put in kettle  condiments, you'll spoil divine taste of fish. Never put in fish-soup potato - it is sacrilege, you'll steal youself.

It is possible to organize fishing tour for europian grayling in any time in a year. It will chang only fishing tackles, kind of transport and fishes activity.  In spring after spawning you will catch grayling щn small creeks junction with light water when water in main river is muddy. In this period it is better to use fishing-rod with bob or with side-nod and mormyshka. This period continues till water will light in rivers and insects flying out. (Read the report about rafting down Kozhim river)). It is time for float-rod and its russian variant "balda", of spinning and rod with bob is coming. (Read the report about rafting down Lemva's tributaries). When first frosts are coming the role of spinning begin to diminish and the best tackle become rod with bob in veiders. This period it is possible to catch by summer and under-ice rod from ice along banks. In winter you can catch grayling from under the ice in snow-falls, in frosts and snow-storm, at first not good and intensively. But when the daylight becomes longer and temperature becomes warmer, grayling begins to attack more activity and frequents your attractions. Maximum of catches will at the April end - May beginning and continues to ice-drift period. The mimimum duration is 3 days. The maximim size of grayling I caught - 62 sm, 2,6 kg.

Golets-palia:

The local people call him "kumzha", but this word is mistaken. Palia preserved from glaciation period, it is relict specie. Becouse I catch it not often and when I fish I don't think about photos. This specie lives in the upperheads of Kozhim, Kosyu, Vangyr, Sunya rivers and in mountain lakes. It prefers to put roes in lakes where  juvenile eat nearly-bottom organisms and insects, big fishes eat young fishes and grow more than 2 kg. Sometimes palia lives in flowing lakes of westen slope of Ural with relict specie - european and siberian grailing. You can catch palia by spinning, rod and in March and April - by winter tackles. It is carefull to go for palia by especial transport with not big group (2-3 person), visiting all perspective lakes searching good trophy, or it is good to take pair of snowmobile. The duration of such tour is 6-8 days.

Taimen:

It lives on tributarys of Mokraya Sunya and Hulga river. The middle size of taimen is 10 kg, but you will catch taimen of this size in proportion 1:20, in this quantity will be small taimens with weight 2-3 kg. Unskilled fisherman usually do such mistake: if they can't  catch  big trophy in first throws they chang tackles and catch grayling and eccidentally catch big taimen which  breaks this tackles and rends very easy and altogether it goes away. What else can  they do but regret. Cathing trophy taimen looks like hunting. Namely in hunting it is important to have excerpt, patience, persistent, even obstinacy. Fisherman wich wanted to catch big trophy need be  in minimum size group when hobody can mix their sole, correct throw. Trophy fishing and rest in "warm" company are differ things. Usuallly most of groups after returning home show in I-net their photos with siberian grailings and small number of small taimens and how they drank 3 boxes of vodka. They boast by not important attainings.

It takes many time to go catch taimen: to furnishing by cross-country vehicle and to boating down-stream to settlment on the Ob river bank and to move from this point to "Big land" (where railway begining). It takes - 15-20 days. If you want to make a trip quickly, it will be more expensive to book cross-country vehicle to start point of the route and helicopter for returning. And there is the most expensive variant to book helicopter both hither and thither. But it is reasonable becouse you won't spend time in places without taimen, you can to be on most perspective places at once and spend you own time with maximum profit. There is alternative for helicopter ( in price of furnishing) - snow-swampy-mobile "Strunnik", it is cross-country vehicle with wheels and it can to overcome any marshy places. "Strunnik" can deliver small group 2-3 person to start point of rafting and take this group from finish point of fishing in beforehand spoken place. Nobody can overcome swampys of west-Siberian lowland on another kind of cross-country vehicle.

Salmon:

It appear in our rivers in  July end - Augest middle. There is small number of this fish in our rivers, most of its quantity catching in low part of Pechora river. You can meet it accidentally, catching grayling by spinning. The big size of this specie is 12-14 kg, the size of dwarf male is above 2 kg. This specie is rarely and preserved and it needs carefully keep and return to water, taimen too.

Taimen can be not big

but it is very beautiful

if you want to observe his beauty
you needn't good weather

you need look his eyes

in this case not big 7-kg salmon will seems bigger

than many fishes

What about pike
this simplicity with large sharp teeth

bends so elegant that I can't be indifferent
